Spring is finally here which means warmer days for my favorite sundresses have suddenly arrived! Clients often ask for recommendations about what to wear for portrait sessions and now I really do have some expert advice to share thanks to Ellie, manager at Dawn Price Baby. We spent a fabulous morning together creating outfit inspirations for spring. The mannequins were very cooperative and surprisingly quiet as you’ll note in the images below.
Trends Ellie sees for spring: rompers are not just for baby anymore – older toddler girls also have great romper options from Tea Collection, Mimi and Maggie and Mayoral. There are also bold prints and plenty of orange [I am biased here I will admit! I LOVE orange and it mixes well with blues, browns and purples too]. Luckily, we are on the same page when it comes to outfits for portraits: go for color and prints and no matchy-matchy khakis and white oxfords!
PHOTOPIA always recommends : Textures, textures, textures, bold color, prints and patterns and layers for cool mornings – and this goes for all ages.
Here’s the scoop on what you’ll see below: the first three images feature Tea Collection with Pink Chicken stripey pants thrown in the mix. Tea Collection is really my go-to for kids’ portrait sessions. Don’t worry about mixing patterns with Tea! All their prints coordinate with each other so mixing stripes with florals or bold patterns not only works, it is recommended! Tea Collection carries over colors in both their boys and girls collection which make it a great option for coordinating siblings.
Other favorite lines with funky prints and patterns [again what I love!]
This is just the beginning of our seasonal styling for portrait sessions so keep an eye out for other summer highlights and a fall preview. Enjoy!
The two shots below feature Mayoral - from Spain, with elegant European styling, classic look similar to Catamini but for a fraction the price. Great for more traditional styling and easy to pair with parent outfits too.
Here’s a fun combo for a boy and girl – both rompers. On the left is a real beach-ready stripe from Mayoral with Le Top on the right [race track ready?].
On the left below is a cool little outfit from Monster Republic - hipster boyswear from L.A. I often hear that there are fewer cool options for boys clothing but look no more. Between Tea and Monster Republic you are in good hands. On the right is the same romper from Le Top.
Summer is officially over and the kids are back in school. I love summertime and this one was truly wonderful. Busy with work plus great family trips, hanging with my girls more and then working and playing in Maine for most of August. Oh, and mid way through the summer I broke my big toe [ouch] which has meant a much slower pace than I am used to! It has been a real exercise in patience while still doing the daily juggle.
All that has left little time for blog posts so I thought I’d kick off the fall with some faves from early summer. This little peanut was such a delight and with such relaxed parents the session was particularly calm and easy. I love how they all engaged with one another as we enjoyed the shade of the big old trees in Stanton Park. I think their clothing worked together fabulously and shows how mixing patterns and textures can add depth and interest to an image. Enjoy!
I first photographed this gorgeous mama her beautiful newborn baby last year – now he’s a walking, babbling, bubbly personality! We lucked into a gorgeous day in January at the Yards Park, one of my favorite new spaces in DC. Since I’ve had PHOTOPIA’s tenth year and pre-digital beginnings on my mind, I brought my old box camera and shot a few frames of film as well. So fun and especially meaningful as these two are so dear to me.
Today is the last day of January, still the beginning of 2012 and I feel that I am finally catching up and ready to start the new year. Today also the birthday of my first child – my baby turns eleven today [crazy!] and it seems a fitting time to share images of a beautiful, new baby girl and launch PHOTOPIA’s tenth year!
There are so many exciting projects and plans afoot, including new print collections, more benefits for return clients and great referral bonuses. To make sure that you stay in the loop and get our monthly news and quarterly postcards please send your info our way.
And now for a few faves of this amazing baby….and I just have to share some pregnancy images of her gorgeous mama too. I even pulled out my old box camera and film for that session – what fun!
When I meet with clients for their pre-session consultation I always ask where they spend time as a family and what would make for a meaningful location for their portrait session. Well, this lovely couple actually had their wedding at the Jefferson Memorial a few years ago [how cool is that!?] and wanted to return for family portraits. It was such a spectacular setting and was made all the more memorable by knowing that this was where they were married. Such joy!
I was lucky enough to share some quiet moments with this sweet baby and his gorgeous mama recently – isn’t he amazing!? He’s two months old here….becoming more alert and smiley every day. Every time I look into his eyes I just melt.
Since this portrait session I’ve been busy photographing high school seniors – fun in an entirely different way. Check back next week for sneak peeks!
We had a wonderful day at Dawn Price Baby in Georgetown photographing babies from 2 1/2 month old twins to a 9 month old with a four year old big sister. What a gorgeous group of babies we had. Thanks to all of the lovely mamas and papas who got down on the ground next to me to help elicit smiles – it worked!
