spring is pink II

Every so often I photograph kids the same ages as my own and it makes me even more acutely aware of how big my girls are getting! I last photographed these kids when they were closer to 2 and 5 years old and now they are 8 and 11. It was such a treat for me to see them through my lens again but also just to hang out and get to know such interesting young people.  As you can see from all of the smiles below, we spent the better part of the morning just cracking up in between conversations about soccer, science experiments and books. Love it!

spring is pink

Springtime in DC has been quite a teaser this year…..not sure if  I’ll be wearing my gloves to a session or sandals!?! I bike to as many DC sessions as possible and have been grateful for those not too chilly mornings when I can peel of the layers and warm up in the sunshine as I photograph. The azaleas and dogwoods were truly in our favor for this session, as were the gorgeous kids, family and grandma too! Love those blue eyes and all the great patterns amongst the textures outdoors….

happy spring!

Here in DC we have a gray, cool start to spring…but we all eagerly await the explosion of color that is to come. This morning my girls and I were excited by the mini daffodils in neighbors’ yards [note, other people's yards....I dream of gardening but so rarely find the time]. Soon it will be ideal weather and landscape for spring portraits – I am so ready after all the dark, chilly days of winter.

I’ve been getting more and more requests for senior portraits which I love doing. The inquiries reminded me that I hadn’t shared some faves from last fall and will do so below. What a joy to capture this amazing age and such a confident, elegant young woman too!

Happy Spring to all!

belly with brothers

I am fortunate to work with many families over time and even photograph multiple pregnancies throughout the years. This family is one of the really special ones to me, I’m not even sure how to describe it. We’ve worked together regularly for many years, and in such an uncomplicated and intimate way. Five years ago I photographed the mama’s first pregnancy and newborn, then one year old and so on until pregnancy #2 [see blog post about expecting Baby Firetruck then as a newborn] and now…pregnancy #3. We decided on Montrose Park as our location, same as pregnancy #2 – love that ivy covered tree and all of the open space in the city.

She is just striking and so at ease being pregnant – though she may disagree with me on this hot day close to her due date!

Look at those sweet boys showing off their bellies too!

Then some faves of the boys, just being themselves. Can’t wait to see them as big brothers together to a new baby brother or sister…stay tuned.

what to wear, what to wear?

I spend alot of time with my clients discussing what to wear. I love this part of the process, maybe it’s my unrealized desire to be a stylist or fashion designer. I go to clients’ homes to see outfits laid out side by side; I look at snaps via email of clothes spread out on a bed. We talk about wearing bright bold colors, textures and layers and ultimately being yourself. And it really pays off in the portraits – as seen with this family below. Even in the black and whites you can see how the textures enhance the image [helped, of course, by the lovely grandma-made quilt].

blossom baby

I’m not sure I have to write much here – isn’t he scrumptious? And he thought those cherry blossom petals were yummy too…

I love mama baby portraits – pure joy!

mini sessions sneak peek

I’m excited to share some faves from the Mini Sessions at Dawn Price Baby in Georgetown. The Mini Sessions were fast and funny with plenty of silly song singing and even crawling after an escaped naked baby! Here are some of faves of some really gorgeous kids…babies coming soon:

and an oopsadaisy out-take for fun:

With such an amazing spring day, we were able to photograph a couple of families outside. These three sweet sibs came with their cousins – they took my breathe away when I saw them all arriving in their flowery finest!

can you tell that smiling sweetheart in the foreground was crying most of the time leading up to this last shot of their Mini Session?

belly and babies

This beautiful mama was photographed a few weeks ago and now she has twins! I love how happy she looks and sexy too.

As with most pregnancy sessions, this one was at home – we played with different locations in the house as well as my “portable studio.” The black backdrop creates such clean lines and shows off her lovely shapes.

Stay tuned for images of the bambinos in the coming weeks!

new lens!

I’ve never been a photo-geek but I’m working on it this spring. I got a new lens and oh, it is so lovely! I played around with it at home first to test it out. My girls are certainly used to the camera, but since goofy is the most common reaction I get [sound familiar?] I tend to prefer their more serious expressions. If you could zoom in on this you could see every eyelash – so amazing!

spring inspiration

Things are happily percolating here at PHOTOPIA – I took an amazing workshop for portrait photographers and my head is spinning with ideas. In the coming weeks, keep your eyes out for new products, including albums and canvas prints, great savings for return clients and a new referral program for your friends.
